Located close to great culinary towns in Hudson Valley such as Hyde Park and Rhinebeck, Fishkill is small town in Dutchess County that can easily get overlooked. I’ve learned to appreciate it especially for the diverse restaurant options available. Most of you may only learn of Fishkill if you’re on Route 9 or I-84 heading north to more scenic parts of Hudson Valley. If you’re on the look out for a stopover, this is a great town to sample high quality cuisine at a reasonable price.
Here is a list of my favorites:
Toro: Serves very authentic Korean food. This place is a regular for many Korean natives in the area. Their bento boxes are great lunch options. If you’re in the mood for some hot food their soft tofu soup and bibimbap (mixed rice with vegetables, chilli paste, fried egg and meat) are served steaming in clay pots. There is also a sushi bar with several roll and sashimi options.
Il Barilotto: Known for its great Italian food and is one of the more expensive dining options in the area. The complimentary bread and butter are so fresh and served as a great appetizer. Their pasta dishes embody fresh ingredients and Italian flavors with a modern touch. This is a wonderful restaurant if you’re celebrating a special occasion or a business lunch. The service is excellent and the staff can help you plan a special menu that suits your budget.
Aladdin Cafe (in Hopewell Junction, a few minutes away from Fishkill): This is the go to place for all Mediterranean specialties such as shawarma (shavings of grilled meat), falafel and kabobs. They have an amazing dessert bar with their own twist on traditional desserts. The portions are on the smaller size but they emphasize the high quality ingredients, gluten free options and authentic preparation. They also have Netflix entertainment for kids on a large flat screen.
Tanjore: The typical Indian buffet that varies by the day. There is a rotating menu of a few vegetarian dishes, a fish curry and two-three meat options. Rice and roti make the base of the meal. Weekends have a few more special offerings, but lunch at Tanjore is a fulfilling three course meal any day of the week.
Pepper Thai: Offers a great lunch menu with the staples such as pad thai, fried rice and curries that satisfy your Thai food cravings. The portions are large and every order includes a house salad as well.
Smokehaus (two locations in Hopewell Junction) If you’re looking for a high quality deli sandwich, this is your place. The meats are made on premises with an emphasis on German specialties. Outdoor seating at one of the sites is great in the summer.
Tomato Cafe: A cozy restaurant where you get regular cafe fare with trimmings. The grilled cheese sandwich is my personal favorite. The lunch portions are large enough to warrant leftovers at most times.
Do make it a point to stop for a meal in Fishkill, New York for affordable, good food with very friendly service that are always accommodating to families.
