Father's Day Weekend 2012 in the Hudson Valley: 8 ideas for how to spoil Dad

Are you spending Father's Day in the Hudson Valley?  Here are 10 things you can do with Dad on Father's Day weekend.

1. For the athletic Dad, there is the 3rd Annual New Paltz Challenge happening with a Father's Day Half Marathon and a Family 5K on Father's Day. Get registration info here.

2. Chocolate loving Dad. Saugerties has Krause's Chocolates and Lucky Chocolates. Krause's Chocolates recently opened another store in New Paltz.

3. Panzur at 60 Broadway in Tivoli is having a Father's Day Brunch, which will include their Fried Chicken, which has been in demand since they introduced as a special during a Sunday dinner.

4.  Cafe Bocca in Poughkeepsie is having a special family style Father's Day dinner from 4pm-6pm. Be sure to make a reservation.

5. Make Dad jump on the jumping pillow on Kelder's Farm and go on a hay ride too!

6. If Dad isn't up to sweating by the BBQ, take him out to a barbecue lunch or dinner at the Hickory BBQ Smokehouse on Route 28.  

7. River Station Restaurant, a.k.,a Captain Cliffy's will be having a Father's Day brunch buffet with a carving station, waffles, omelets, and other yummy dishes. $19.95 all you can eat! Reservations are suggested, but you can walk-in too.

8. Treat Dad to a spa service at River Rock Day Spa in Woodstock.  He can de-stress with their Men's Hot Towel Organic Retreat Facial or choose from one of their many massage offerings (Thai, deep tissue, weekend warrior, or hot stone).  Both my husband and I have had excellent massages and facials here over the years.

Run through the beautiful hills of Woodstock at The Woodstock Races 15K and 5K on Memorial Day, which begin at Zena Elementary School. Same day registration is $25.

Belleayre Beach in Pine Hill opens up May 26th-June 10th for weekends only. You can rent a paddle boat here too. The snack bar is pretty limited so if you are hungry, bring your lunch in a cooler.

Jump on a Jumping Pillow at Kelder's Farm and pose with the World's Second Largest Garden Gnome.

The Trolley Museum of NY (Kingston Trolley Museum) will have its seasonal opening this weekend. Great family fun for young train buffs.

The Kingston Farmers Market begins on May 26th on Wall Street in Kingston. Afterwards you can walk over to Duo Bistro for a gourmet brunch or lunch.

Diamond Mills Hotel & Tavern in Saugerties will be hosting  an All American Picnic from 11:30 am to 6pm. Adults are $38. Children 16 and under are $18, and kids under 10 eat for free!

Chichester Yoga is having special themed weekend on Memorial Day Weekend:  Detox, Dance, Yoga & Drumming. Do check out. Not only do they have talented yoga instructors, they have the best yoga views in the Hudson Valley!

Go to an old fashioned Memorial Day parade in Rhinebeck. Walk over to Gigi's Trattoria for a farm to table lunch. Skizza Bianca is my fave!

Listen to live music in Woodstock at Yum Yum Noodle Bar. On Friday May 25 they will have the Berkamp Brothers playing on the patio starting at 8:30, and on Saturday May 26 Paul McMahon playing at 8:30.

Hang out with very cool farm animals at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary.  Curious about becoming a vegan? Come back next weekend. They are having a Veg-Curious day on June 2nd with local vegan experts.

Hickory Barbecue and Smokehouse on Route 28: Corned Beef on St. Patrick's Day

 

If you are looking for a good place to have corned beef and cabbage on St. Patrick's Day in the Hudson Valley, go to Hickory Smokouse BBQ on Route 28 in Kingston.  We have been going here for take-out since we moved here in 2003. We ate here on St. Patrick's Day last year.  It was delicious!

The comfort food is really tasty, and there are way too many temptations on the menu--pulled pork, ribs, beef brisket, sourdough onion rings, quesadilla, and it goes on. Even though the barbecue meat is their specialty, the salads are the freshest salads I've tasted around here. We split a chopped salad with goat cheese to start. No limp lettuce here! My husband ordered the Corned Beef and Cabbage, and I had the grilled vegetable wrap with gouda cheese and a baked sweet potato with maple butter, and kale as sides.

The kids grilled cheese sandwich is made with thick slices of white bread, and I managed to resist stealing a bite! We got there before the St. Patrick's Day revelers did so it wasn't crowded, but I'm sure it gets crowded later on. The Hickory Smokehouse BBQ also does catering. Take-out is available too.
