My husband took me out to restaurant Vivo at the Lazy Swan Golf Club in Saugerties. Last week I met Win Morrison at Duo Bistro, and of course, whenever I tell people that I write about Hudson Valley Good Stuff, they always suggest their favorite restaurants. Win told me that The Lazy Swan is one of his favorite places to dine so we ended up going there for my birthday. I love going to new-to-me restaurants even though I do crave the Restaurants I Love.
We arrived there around 6pm, and there was only one other party dining (a well-behaved family of 7). The decor is kind of old-fashioned elegant Italian with very comfortable chairs, candle lit room, and very cozy. Sinatra music played on the stereo throughout our meal. (As we were looking at our menus, the other party started singing Happy Birthday to their grandma!) Two more couples came in later.
We started with a Fondue for 2, which was really good though I was expecting it to come with fancy long forks and cubed bread. We shared a Caesar salad which was close to perfect. For the main entree I had the stuffed grilled shrimp with orzo, which was good, but a bit on the salty side. I was kind of full from the Fondue, so I didn't eat the orzo that came with the shrimp. Tom had the stuffed fillet of sole which he enjoyed.
I was determined to leave room for dessert, and I'm glad I did. The apple cobbler with vanilla ice cream was huge and delicious. We didn't finish it all. Our server Kristen was very courteous and paitient with my questions. From what I've heard the Raw Bar at the Lazy Swan is very busy during the summer. I made a mental note to come back next Summer and check out the Raw Bar on the restaurant's deck. It will feel more like what their website claims "Hamptons in the Hudson Valley" in the Summer I think. All in all, it was a nice dining experience, and seeing the sunset from our table made up for the salty shrimp.
